The Keeper of Small Lights

They told her never to take the lamp past the garden gate. Not because of what might find her. Because of what might follow her home. Every evening, just before the sun disappeared, she lit the little amber lamp and walked the same path beneath the moss-covered trees. One by one, the fireflies gathered around her. She never caught them. She simply carried the light, and they remembered the way.
